Welcome

Welcome to Under the Sea in Hawaii. We are based on the island of Oahu.  If you are coming to visit please don't miss this one of a kind opportunity.

Under the Sea is absolutely unique.  Marine biologist Barbara Whitman, an award-winning marine biologist, educator and entrepreneur described by Islands Magazine as "famed ... for her enthusiastic teaching style", recently moved Under the Sea from the Caribbean to Hawaii.

Once in Hawaii, Barbara spent weeks snorkeling all over the island looking for just the right spots to take her guests.  Sites were chosen for the quality of the reefs, the presence of sea turtles or dolphins and the lack of big snorkeling operations.  As a result, Under the Sea offers a superior experience. Some snorkel sites may be a little more difficult to reach but the extra effort is well worth it.

Barbara has done research and taught in the temperate Atlantic, the tropical Atlantic, the Caribbean and the tropical Pacific over the span of a 35-year career. As a result, her programs are taught from a global perspective and her practical experience is extensive. Go to Under the Sea Nevis to learn more about her and the operations in Nevis.

Over the last 12 years, Barbara has worked with sea turtles.  In Nevis she raised, acclimated and released Hawksbill Sea Turtle hatchlings that were injured or in bad condition after they were born.  (Read more here.)

On Oahu the most common sea turtles are Green Sea Turtles.  The remarkable thing about them is that they are exhibiting behaviors we didn't know were natural.  They have been hunted for centuries and stopped coming up onto the beaches to bask in the sun.  But because the turtles have been protected in Hawaii since the 1970's they are returning to their natural behaviors.  As a result they are easier to see and don't flee from swimmers.  But there is a Turtle Etiquette we must observe to ensure that Hawaiian sea turtles don't have to abandon their natural behavior and return to avoidance behavior because they are being pestered by curious humans.

Under the Sea snorkel trips are sensitive to the wild life and the environment.  We take nothing but pictures and touch nothing but hearts.
